I’ve only recently discovered one of the best things about living in New York City. I work the graveyard shift as a nurse and while this has changed my life in almost every way possible, I was determined from the start not to let it affect my tea drinking habit.
I usually begin the shift with some coffee around 7pm, but by the time I take my break at 4am I am craving some hot, calming, delicious tea. I had no idea what to expect the first time I ventured outside in the wee hours of the morning on a hunt for tea. But I didn’t have to step too far outside of the revolving doors of the hospital to find what I needed. A push cart!
My chosen push cart is right outside of the hospital doors, and at 3:30-4am he is usually still setting up shop. The first time I went it was so dark and the windows were so steamed up I didn’t even think anyone was there. I always get the same thing- one tea with splenda and some milk. Simple, delicious, hot, and only .75cents! I let my tea brewer keep the change (or if I’m short he lets me slide) and run back inside to work for another 4 hours. My tea break is the best part of the night.

Early grey tea straight from the streets of NYC is available 24hrs a day, and while it may not be the classiest of teas, it sure is tasty.
Thank goodness for other graveyard shift workers-we keep each other in business!
How exactly do they keep the water so hot in that little cart? For more on push carts check out this great film: “Man Push Cart”
