Tea Review: Japanese Cherry Green Tea

Japanese Cherry Green Tea: Up Close and Personal

A few weeks ago I went over to TeaNY on the lower east side of manhattan in New York City.  Now lemme tell you this place is a swanky joint, very cozy and cool looking this is a tea drinkers cafe.  Fear not they also serve beer, fantastic vegan deserts (try the lime cheescake), and have a great variety of vegetarian main courses as well.

But back to the issue at hand here folks, TeaNY is a tea place first and foremost.  So after looking at there menu which consists of almost 100 different blends, i decided to go with this guy right here:  Lucky number 62

The Japanese Cherry Green Tea.  It seemed like something that could be good and who doesnt love cherries?!

I ended up buying a 1oz container and making a pot from that so i could have more tea to come home and taste later on.  At first I followed the instructions of someone else with regards to the steep time (i know! what was i thinking?) and let the tea sit for about 1.5 minutes.   A little too short in my opinion, i thought.  But hey, i figured i would give it a shot since it’s a tea i’d never had before.

Initially the tea looked incredibly light and i couldnt even tell that there was any coloration at all (granted, all i had was candle light).  So i took a couple sips and decided to let it steep for a little bit longer in order to really get a taste for this green tea.  After waiting another minute or so, i took the bag out and was ready to rock and roll.  The tea tasted much better and i really appreciated the fact that the cherry flavoring doesnt kick so much that it takes away from the green tea taste of it all.

Since my TeaNY escapade, i’ve had the tea several more times first thing in the morning and it’s really awesome if you leave to steep for 3 minutes to get that cherry flavor.  I’ve even gone so far as to add some honey from time to time when i feel adventurous.  So, overall i would definitely have this tea again but would tend to steep it for a little bit longer than recommended to get that rich feeling you’ve come to know and love from a flavored tea.  On the other hand, it’s a green tea first with a hint of cherry so who am i kidding?  Oh well, my quest will continue as i scour the earth searching for more awesome tea in hopes that one day i’ll find the perfect cup.
